The Western Isles Community Games is an annual athletics match that takes place at Stornoway running track. Each district (North Uist, Stornoway North, Back, Harris etc.) fields one
individual in each race. There are several age groups and there is a boys and girls section. The district you represent is based on where you live in the Western Isles. It is not just a childrens
event, it goes all the way up to the highest age group of over 35's. The events that took place during the 2006 CG were, 100m, 200m, 800m, long jump and shott putt. Also mens and womens 4x100m
relays are held at the end, made up of 4 seperate age group eventers. Each individual can do a maximum of two events plus the relay. Points are awarded depending on final posistion in the race. The
district with the most points overall after all events wins. North Uist has won this event every single time since its inception. The total of now 9 years running is a source of great pride for North
Uist residents and its made all the more amazing that the popualtion of North Uist is considerably lower than most other districts. Despite this disadvantage North Uist continually shows its talent and
organisation by winning year after year. |
