Scottish National Cross Country Relays 06

North Uist AAC made only it's second ever appearence at the Scottish National Cross Country Relays held at Cumbernauld Park, in the central-blet town of Cumbernauld on the 28th October 2006.  The Park is 2 miles from Cumbernauld High School, where the event was co-ordinated from.  It proved an illusive destination to find!  The event draws teams from all over Scotland in the Junior and Senior catergories to prove that their club has the most strength and depth over the age groups.

3 complete boys and 3 complete girls teams were entered for the event as well and an incomplete girls team.  The teams had been decided by a one-off race of the Half-Circle road track at Paible School a few weeks before the event on the 28th of October.

The team travelled to Stirling, where they stayed in the youth hostel on the Friday night then atteded the race on the Saturday.  Once the races had finished the team made their way back to Inverness youth hostel for the Saturday night and then back home to Uist on the Sunday ferry from Uig.

For the trip the council minibus was driven by Ewan Johnson, Kathleen MacLeod took her people carrier and Anita MacLean took her people carrier to make up the convoy.  Kathleen's people carrier has become a talismanic, backbone figure of recent North Uist AAC history and it showed it's worth on trips yet again!

The race itself was on the very hilly, very muddy Cumbernauld Park track.  The weather was poor and it had been threatening to rain all day.  In the end it was drizzly with soggy, cold, damp conditions.  The girls teams found the course extremly demanding and gave great accounts of themselves racing against some of the best runners in Scotland.  The boys too raced very well and tried not to let the course get the better of them, however the course did claim one victim, Graham Black's right foot fell runner was lost half-way through his lap, and he kept running!  Everyone ran well and it should be noted that Iain F MacDonald, who was running for Cambuslang, put in one of the laps of the day leading his team to a strong finish.

A massive thanks to the adults who helped make this trip possible and it is hoped that North Uist will enter teams for many years to come.
