After missing out due to the weather in 2005 North Uist AAC attended the North Districts Cross Country 2006 at the East Beach in Nairn with a large team filled with high expectations. It was the
long weekend holiday for the Uist schools so by leaving on the Friday no-one was missing any lessons. The trip started off on the wrong foot however because of a change in youth hostel booking rules meant all the
previously booked rooms for North Uist had been given away by the Inverness youth hostel. The result was everyone had rooms for the Saturday night but the Firday night was not so straighfoward. The children
had to be doubled up in the remaining rooms, some sharing with Stornoway RAC, and even a few were farmed out to local bed and breakfasts. Curly and Iain MacLeod ended up sleeping on the hallway floor as there was
no space left! The race itslef went very well and there was two indivual silver medals won by Iain F MacDonald and Laura Johnson in the mens and womens under 17 races as well as two sets of team gold medals in the
same mens and womens under 17 races. North Uist had a proud history in the mens under 17 team catergory and Curly in particular was gald to see the title return to Uist. Overall although there was
complications everyone enjoyed themselves thoroughly in the race and then the football match (ICT v Hearts) or shopping later on. Also getting to watch 'Casino Royale' proved very popular amoung the team!
The level of expectation in the end was perhaps too high but still the team gave a very good account of itself. A huge thanks to all the adults that came on this trip to help out and without them the trip wouldn't
have been possible. |
