Langass start

North Uist AAC cross country preparation and training is during the months of September through to January held every Saturday at Langass hill in the middle of North Uist.  It is a 10 minute drive away from Lochmaddy and is instantly recognisable due to the Barpa and standing stones visible from the road that help make up the course.

Langass is perhaps one of the toughest 2 mile training routes around, which is a challenge to all who attempt it.  It starts with a fast start along the winding, pot-holed road to the lodge then it changes to a steep ascent up the hill in the bogs and mud. The middle section of running along the top of the hill is extremely challenging on the colder, windier days as breathing is sometimes an impossible task!  The final section is a fast descent down the hill, round the Barpa and down the hill again.  The whole course is littered with bogs, holes, traps and several areas where footing must be watched.

Experience is everything when running Langass but even then the more times you do it, the harder it seems to get!  Not many have ever run it and not had to walk at some stage in the 2 mile course, this is a testament to it's difficultly.

Langass can only be summed up as the Marmite of North Uist athletics, you either love it or hate it!  It is an experience unparalleled by anything else and puts all who do it in good stead for all cross country competitions.  This perhaps helps to explain the degree of success achieved by North Uist cross country runners when they attend mainland events.

Saturday mornings never seemed so much fun before!
