Morale was low now and only the brightest optimists expected to reach the competition in time. Unfortunately Eva Troughton and Fiona Morrison, the two
youngest athletes on the trip, had to give up at this point as they wouldn't have reached Edinburgh in time for their races. While the ferry was motionless in Tarbert, the athletes occupied themselves with complimentary
meals, Travel Cludo and indoor football in the aisles, believe it or not!As the frustrating day drew to a close, the athletes prepared themselves for a rough night's sleep – ferry's weren't designed to sleep in!
However, they made the best of what the ferry offered them and managed a few, uncomfortable hours of sleep. The ferry left Tarbert at 3 o'clock when the winds had died down, leaving the athletes just enough time to
reach Edinburgh for their competition. As they woke up at half past four they had finally reached Uig and were straight back on to the mini bus to make their way to Edinburgh. Once they reached Edinburgh they battled
valiantly for the North Of Scotland. The flat course was extremely different to Saturday mornings at Langass, but it was the harsh wind that affected performances more significantly. In extremely tough races the
East and West District teams dominated, but this was always going to be the case. However, there were some impressive performances from the NUAAC athletes and they should be proud of being selected to compete for their
district. The athletes also met Triple Jump world record holder Jonathan Edwards and European Cross Country Champion Mo Farah, photographs with these men can be viewed in the gallery. The club members stayed
afterwards to watch some BBC televised world-class cross country running, with distance running legend Kenenisa Bikele standing out with a particularly astonishing run. After all this excitement the athletes made their
way back to Dingwall to stay on Saturday night. Thank you to Johnny Junor for his bedroom! Also thank you to Mairi Levack for some fantastic early morning driving! |
